Owing to a change to the Continuous Insurance Enforcement Law on 20th June 2011, the law now states that all vehicles MUST be insured by law and this includes vehicles that are just kept on the driveway or in the garage that have not been declared SORN.

Therefore, unless a SORN declaration has been made, you would still need to insure your car whether it is in a roadworthy condition or not. Why keep paying soaring insurance prices when you could receive money instead on some scrap car prices!

When a SORN is necessary:

1 – If you’re keeping your vehicle off the road and you do not renew your vehicle tax or are applying for a tax refund.

2 – Every 12 months a new declaration of SORN must be made.

3 – If you’re keeping your vehicle off the road and no valid insurance has been taken out or it is being cancelled.

4 – If you have purchased an untaxed vehicle and do not tax it.

5 – In advance, if a vehicle is being kept off the road during your time abroad.

A SORN is not necessary…

1 – if you have informed the DVLA on the fact you no longer have the vehicle

2- if you are not keeping the car and have made a vehicle tax refund application

3- if you are keeping the car and it is not taxed for 14 days or less or if it was last taxed prior to January 31st 1998
