Renault Dealers StoryJanuary 9

As a talented engineer, Louis Renault enjoyed designing and building his own automobiles. He saw how his brothers handled his father’s textile business, and he recruited them to start an automobile company with him. His brothers, Marcel and Fernand took care of the business tactics of running the company while Louis designed and built the merchandise. The Renault Dealers sold their first vehicle the same year they founded the Renault automobile company, 1898. The client who purchased the vehicle was impressed by the innovative design of the tiny car, and how it ran so well.

Soon after creating their business, the company became very involved with the new and popular motor races in Switzerland. Two of the three original Renault Dealers drove their merchandise in the races until Marcel died in a car accident in the Paris-Madrid race in 1903. After that, Louis stopped racing, but they still had their vehicles participating in the races.  In fact, it was a Renault vehicle that won the very first Grand Prix motor racing event in 1906. That same year, Louis was left to run the company alone when his brother Fernand retired from the business because of health problems. Louis kept the company going strong until after World War II when he was imprisoned and possibly murdered.

Louis kept the Renault’s reputation of innovative and ahead of their time through out his life. In World War I, he started producing ammunition, military airplanes, and military vehicles (including the Renault FT-17 tank) for the Allies. The Allies honored Renault Dealers after the war for their great contribution. Between the wars, Renault started to produce agricultural and industrial machinery. Originally a French company, Renault vehicles became very popular in the United Kingdom. The London operation helped supply the needs of their clients in the United Kingdom. During World War II, Louis refused to build military vehicles like tanks for Nazi Germany when France surrendered in 1940. He did, however, produce lorries for them. After the war, he was accused of collaborating with German occupiers and he was imprisoned. He died before he could defend his case. It is said that he was possibly murdered because the autopsy showed that his neck was broken.
