How to Handle CA DMV RegistrationJanuary 19

If you are just moving into the state of California, you will have twenty days from the time you establish your residency, in which you will need to acknowledge your vehicles with CA DMV registration. The only exceptions to this law apply to students and military service people who may be eligible for exemption because of their temporary status. Because  every California resident has to deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles, it might be helpful to know a little about its history.

The first horseless carriage showed up in California in 1897. By 1905, it would cost $2.00 to register the average $500.00 car on the road, and there were over 17,000 vehicles being driven at that time. The money was designated for the building of new roads and highways. By 1931, the CA DMV registration process was well in place and the DMV was its own distinct department. Its modern vision statement: “Driving change. Customer focused. Solution oriented. Innovative.” suggests a determination to offer the best service possible, but you will always be warned to “make an appointment first.”

While there are some vehicle registration tasks that you can do online, such as registration renewals, replacing lost registration forms and/or stickers, and title transfers, establishing your vehicle for the first time will need to be done at a CA DMV registration office for which you had better make an appointment or be prepared to patiently wait. The advantages of registering with an online company that is bonded and licensed are many. You need no appointment and will not stand in line. Neither will you waste fuel and time driving to a DMV office, and many of the legitimate companies often guarantee next-day delivery of your paperwork.

If you buy a new vehicle in California, your dealer usually takes care of filing the transfer title and registration paperwork and paying the required fees within the allotted 10 days. It remains your option if you would rather do this yourself. Used vehicles require a bit more work. If you are selling yours, you have five days to notify CA DMV registration.  Registering your own vehicle after just moving into the state will also require some work. You will need to fill out the proper paperwork, present both smog and mileage certificates, allow your VIN # to be verified (take your vehicle with you) and pay the listed fees. To calculate what you will have to pay, you can use the registration fee calculator online to estimate for both new and used vehicles. Costs vary according to year, make, and model. Once your vehicle is properly registered, you can move on to many more interesting activities in California.
