Which Tarp System Fits Your Needs?March 23
Just as we are told that only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys, the difference between truck tarping systems is the type and quality of the system you choose. From Tonka trucks to dump trucks and big rigs they all need to cover and protect the cargo they haul. A good quality truck tarp is the answer. The only question is; which type is right for your job and container? Today we are going to discuss two different types; manual and automatic arm systems and front to back cable systems.
An arm system uses a roller mechanism to pull the tarp into its housing. With a manual arm system you will manually pull the tarp over your load using a guide or ropes and secure the truck tarp in place. Manual systems work well if your trailer is 22 feet or less. Anything more than 22 feet up to forty feet it is best recommended to utilize the automatic arm system. The automatic system is electric and powers the tarp back into the housing. The term automatic is simply as easy as flipping a switch. This is especially helpful if you have a peak load where the manual method can be somewhat cumbersome. The automatic arm lifts the tarp up and over the load.
Front to back cable systems are a great tarping method for most containers. Especially for larger containers and those with open tops. Where the arm system uses ropes and roller methods the cable system uses one or two cables to open and close the truck tarp. Bows are inserted into pockets in the tarp and the cable drives the bows. Since the cable tarps don’t have to be tied down there is never a worry about flapping so they last longer than arm systems. Cable systems come with either manual hand cranks or electric drives. When looking at cable systems consider the difference between the twin cable top slider and the single cable top slider. The twin cable top slider is about the most economical cable system on the market. A single cable slider has the most improved design in over twenty years. Having just one continuous cable eliminates the possibility of jamming.
Your choice of systems is determined by your personal preference and budget. Choose from manual or automatic, arm system or cable. Both systems produce a quality truck tarp. Many are found with a simple click of your mouse on the Internet. Happy hauling!
