Used Audi ConsiderationJuly 28
If you’re on the lookout for a used car that has that little bit extra ‘oomph’ to it, then you may have already considered looking for a used Audi. A popular choice with used car buyers is a used Audi A3, as it offers economy, speed, style and luxury, all in one nicely presented package.
The A3 is a relatively small yet prominent car, with a good smooth ride. The wheels are relatively close to the corners of the body, so handling is nimble and front-end grip is good too. As you’d expect from a Used Audi, it’s easy to drive, composed and carries a certain air of authority about it – not bad for the smallest car of Audi’s range. The engines are good too, with an efficient yet effective range of TDI diesels. The 1.6-litre FSI was replaced in early 2008 with an impressive 1.4 TFSI, and the small turbocharged unit punches well above its weight, as do larger 1.8-litre TFSI and 2.0-litre TFSI powerplants. There is also a 3.2-litre V6 for those who would rather a more electrifying experience.
As Audi’s smallest model in its range at the time, the A3 sold nearly as well as the A4 – the manufacturer’s bestselling car to date. Thus, there are plenty of used models around waiting to be snapped up. Whilst the car came in both three door and five door models, three door models seem to be less common than the more practical yet not-as-attractive five door models. If it’s the three door model you’re after, chances are you’ll have to look that little bit harder to find the one you want. In comparison to the BMW 1-Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Alfa Romeo 147 and the Volkswagen Golf (the car that the A3 is almost exactly based on), the A3 certainly seems to hold its own. Whilst the other models seem to scream evidence that they are the entry-level models of the range, the A3 seems to radiate strength and solidity – a trait in all of Audi’s models.
Inside the car, the sense of strength and good build quality continues. There’s little to fault in the cabin, save for the fact that some may find it too clean and clinical. The finish is good and does not appear cheap and tacky at all (unlike the Mercedes). Details such as the rotating air vents and brushed metal handles all add to the A3’s impressive appearance, although may appear a little tired in thoroughly used Audi A3s. Ample legroom in the rear and a 350-litre boot mean that the car can perform well both as a useable, rather prolific hatchback, or as a small family car as well – two things that not many used cars can do too well these days. Of course, such quality and prestige does come at a price. Deflation on used Audi A3s is often very low, meaning you’ll most likely pay over the odds for a used A3 in comparison to any of its competitors. But when you discover the end result, you may feel it was all worth it.
