Triumph Bonneville HistoryJuly 19

One of three motorcycle models from Britain, the Triumph Bonneville got its name from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. It was included with other motorcycle companies as trying to make strides in the world motorcycle speed records. The current version which has been produced since 2001 by the modern successor of the original company has been completely redesigned and reengineered to give riders a more enjoyable experience. If that is possible, since this motorcycle has been around for over 100 years. Longevity certainly has its place when it comes to the thrill and demand for motorcycles.

The popularity of the original Triumph Bonneville was largely due to its performance when compared to other motorbikes. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, worldwide sales began to slump from the competition of the modern Japanese motorbikes that were manufactured by Honda. However, the T120 remained the best selling motorcycle at home. Originally, the Bonneville was a two cylinder motorcycle. It was produced with a pre-unit construction engine that enabled a comfortable 115 mph without needing modification. Later, around 1963, a much stiffer and compact unit construction model was introduced. A few years later, the steering angle was altered. These and other changes allowed the Bonneville to match its over all performance to its rivals in the market.

As time progressed, so did the Triumph Bonneville for various markets. The T120R was developed as an export model for the U.S.market. It had higher handlebars and a smaller fuel tank. The T120C was produced as the competition model, and had high level exhaust pipes. The T120TT is best known for the famous jump by Evel Knievel over the fountains at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, he was injured after losing control upon landing. A special model was manufactured for racing events. The T120RT had to be sold to the public before it could qualify for a race. Of course, this model met its goal, and went on to achieve racing success. This rich history comes with a reassurance to anyone who buys this brand of motorcycle. Knowing how the Bonneville has evolved gives you a greater appreciation when you are gliding down the road.
