Ford Dealers EconomyMay 24

When the American economy hit some serious speed bumps and started to fall apart at the seams in the fall of 2008, one of the hardest hit areas of the economy outside of the banking industry was the automotive industry.  This was manifested mainly in the government bailouts and subsequent bankruptcy filings of the corporations General Motors and Chrysler.  Out of the three American automotive giants, two were in serious trouble.  The third company, Ford, did not fare nearly as bad, and managed to stay afloat without government help.  This fact has given Ford Dealers a leg up on nearly all of the competition as the economy starts to rebound.

To start with, Ford Dealers did not face the major shut downs and layoffs that many of Chrysler and General Motors dealers did.  Famously, General Motors was forced to close several thousand dealerships around the country, resulting in a loss of untold number of jobs, not only of those directly employed by the dealerships, but of those who held jobs that supported the dealerships in one way or another, whether through parts or other supplies or something else.  Some General Motors brands were completely shut down, such as Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer, leaving those dealerships empty and those employees unemployed.  These woes have not had a small effect on the reputations of both General Motors and of Chrysler.  Rather, consumers find themselves worrying about the reliability of not only the car but also the company.  Who wants to buy a car and not know if you will be able to get it serviced or find parts for it in the future?

Ford Dealers, on the other hand, have used this negative publicity surrounding their competitors to their advantage, and Ford has managed to increase its market share significantly in the past year and a half.  Ford has been a stalwart of American manufacturing for over a hundred years, and they are apt to remind car shoppers that they are not going anywhere.  In fact, Ford has been enjoying some of the best numbers it has seen in years, even in this terrible economic situation.  This all bodes well for the Ford Dealers and the employees whose livelihoods come from those dealerships.
