Car Dealers – Mazda MX-5March 29
Once at the top of its game, the Mazda MX-5 has somehow reduced itself to become the now sneeringly branded ‘hairdressers car’. This motor still has a way to go before it proves itself butch enough for the multitude of alloy snobs out there, but we’d like to know why.
Perhaps spoilt with the indulgent array of sporties on the market, the Mazda is often left sat in the dust these days. But fun, flirty and stylish – what’s not to covet? Like a rocket, this Mazda will shoot from John O’Groats to Lands swifter than some of the best road guzzlers out there. Smooth handling and a boisterous engine make it a slap in the face when it comes to performance, as the drive is a gentle purr at top speeds, and with ten times the control of a used Audi.
It doesn’t seem like Mazda are doing a great deal to vamp up the original features: new headlights, some toned down chrome, and a slight cut on emissions, there’s not much sacrificing going on. Having said that, it’s never been an ugly car, and overall, we’re pleased with the quality. This is a nice solid car you won’t be too scared to lean on or take to the car wash.
Engineered into a slick, fluid body, the new Mazda’s bullet-like appearance is enough to pierce your will power and make you agree that this IS a nice car. Latest models have a fresher appearance and are roomier than ever so that males of the world can no longer blame height restrictions. Leg room won’t even reach the ‘cramped’ category, and the power folding hard-top means you won’t even have to pull over in the frequent British downpours (and so what if that’s 360 days a year?)
One of the more accommodating sports cars, you’ll feel comfortable in this cruiser without predicting two broken legs. Some luxury cabin features and a range of hot new colours keep things optimistic, black being one of our favourites. Slightly tight if you’re travelling for two, but what more can you expect from a convertible? If you’re thinking about making a purchase, do your homework first, as some of the cheaper models are somewhat lacking on gadgets. More recent models however are still a fairy snippy price for something so sporty looking, and needn’t break the bank with flimsy extras. Having said that, the Bose stereo unit makes an extra cool drive.
Not the eighth wonder of the world, perhaps, but certainly better than a used Audi. We think it’s time Mazda bullies came clean and saw the classic motor for what it really is; original sports quality. Perhaps there’s more persuading to be done, but if you don’t believe us, take a test drive and see. Smooth, don’t you think? Stop being a victim of conformity and dish out your savings.
