March 16th marked the 15th annual International Bicycle Design Competition held in Taipei, Taiwan with contestants coming from near and far with the hopes of winning big. Constants push the envelope each year with the functionality, shapes and construction components of bicycles. This year there were over 863 submissions from 58 counties all over the world. As the popularity of the event grows and gathers more attention, it has become the authority on new trends and innovative concepts for the cycling community.
This year Taiwanese designers Chang Zhen-wei and Chang Jia-chi took the silver medal on their own home turf for their design “Somerset”. The Somerset features a semi-elliptical down tube as the bike’s main frame which allows the handlebars to slide down the tube making the bicycle easily fold into itself. The inventors stated they wanted to create a folding bike that easily fit onto a trolley, a popular mode of transportation in their country. The Cycling and Health Industry, organizer of the entire event, said that their entry won due to its major appeal and with a few minor tweaks it will be all set for mass production and hopefully released on the market shortly thereafter. The devise also captured a special prize from Taiwan’s Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
Other winners at the event include a submission named ARIA, a one piece jointless road bike constructed out of carbon fibers, a Hybrid Golf design consisting of a foldable bike which carries golf bags and luggage and a travel case which also functions as a bicycle briefcase for everyday commuters.
